"Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; And from morning to night, as from the cradle to the grave, it is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress."
~Charles Dickens

I've been learning a lot about seasons lately. Not the seasons we learn about in elementary school- if only it could be just that simple. With the 4 seasons (not the band or hotel, I'm talking about the original 4 seasons- fall-winter-spring-summer), we know what to expect. Sure, maybe there's one of those off-the-charts extremely hot summers or ice-cold winters (which to a Southern California native like me would translate into anything under 50 degrees), but for the most part, we know how to pack our suitcase. We know just how to dress, when to carry an umbrella or when to forget the hair straightener and throw on a hat instead because it's going to rain. And as much as it's nice to have your outfit all set out for the next day like a perfect little plan, real life is never that easy.
When in the midst of the winter and the rain, you dream of summer. Summer eventually arrives, as promised, but give it a few weeks and you're complaining "It's too hot!" and you begin crossing your fingers for an early fall. It's always something and we don't have any idea what we really want. We want to hang on and want to resist and want to stay warm next to the fire and want keep life just as it is because it's all we know. Sometimes we even want to scream at the top of our lungs "Be gentle!" But, ready or not, there is always another season on its way, just around the corner, gently carrying "some beauties of its own"...carrying to you just what you need. Not early. Not late. But just when you need it.
